A Community of Tacoma
An Example of a PrayGround

A PrayGround or PrayerGround is an intentional space within an established sanctuary or worship area. The goal of this space is for kids to experience and participate fully in worship alongside the congregation. It allows them to express worship and prayer in uniquely childlike ways. PrayGrounds are spaces where children can be fluid, move around, and keep attention by hands-on activities. Studies show that children learn to worship best when they are integrated in a multigenerational setting rather than segregated. We want kids to know how to worship by giving them space to observe, participate, and experience worship in a new way. Parents would be expected to sit with young children or babies. We would create a member support schedule that will provide oversight and clean-up each Sunday.

On August 12, 2025, the Vestry voted unanimously to embrace the development of a PrayGround in our Sanctuary.  However, their approval was contingent upon us receiving a matching $650 grant from the Diocese.  We are pleased to announce that the Diocese approved our request and actually increased the amount to $750 to cover half of our projected costs.  See price estimates below.

What is Needed?

We would like to use the space closest to the altar, next to the reflecting pond.  This would require the removal of 2 pews plus the privacy screen.  It’s important for kids to see what is happening at the altar.

We will need to both purchase and collect various items to create our Pray Ground space: rug, small table and matching child sized chairs, storage bins and shelves for art supplies, books, and soft toys.  We will utilize supplies that we already have, but will need to purchase durable, quality items that will be aesthetically pleasing in our sanctuary space. Price estimates are as follows:

Rug $500
Shelves $400
Table & Chairs $500
Misc items $100
Total: $1500

How will the costs be covered?
Since the Diocese will cover $750 of the costs, it is our role to solicit donations to cover the rest.  If you are interested in helping to set up and develop this Ministry, please contact me either by text (253.677.8227) or by email (mccarren17@comcast.net)

It was so wonderful to have two babies in church this past Sunday.  For Christ Church, a PrayGround serves as a visual reminder that kids aren’t an afterthought, rather a vital part of our congregation. I hope you will join me in donating to this important ministry for children.

God’s Peace,

Christi McCarren
