May 5 to May 8

Rogation Days are an old tradition in the church, especially in the Anglican and Episcopal traditions, although they originated in France in the fifth century. In England Rogation Days are associated with the blessing of fields for planting. Rogation Sunday is usually the last Sunday before Ascension, this year on May 5. The three weekdays, Monday through Wednesday, before the Feast of the Ascension are called Rogation Days.

Originally the focus was on agriculture, the blessing of fields and crops, and with fishing. The current Book of Common Prayer has widened the focus of Rogation Days to include commerce and industry more generally as well as the stewardship of creation. Celebrating Rogation Days in the home is a wonderful way to remember these ancient traditions and to renew our commitment to the land and all God’s creation. I hope you find these prayers meaningful!
