SUMMARY:From Field to Fork: Food Choices as Creation Care
DESCRIPTION:How can we build a more just and sustainable food system? On
Earth Day\, Kenyan-American Gordon Okumu will explore our food choices
as a form of creation care. This free\, public presentation is sponsored
by the Greening Parish Committee of Christ Episcopal Church in Tacoma.
\n\n\n\nGordon Okumu is deeply committed to creating a food system that
is good for people and the planet. His education in environmental policy
and his work in community development have given him a deep understandi
ng of how local food systems can empower communities and protect our env
ironment.Gordon’s Bachelor's degree in Global Studies with a focus on
Environmental Diplomacy has shaped his vision of the complex connections
between farming\, the environment\, and global policies. His current wo
rk towards a Master's degree in Public Policy at Oregon State University
specializing in Environmental Policy gives him the skills to develop an
d advocate for effective policies that improve our food systems.\n\n\n\n
In his work for King County as an Environmental Investigator Gordon enga
ges with businesses and communities to promote environmentally friendly
practices. Through this work he has developed skills to collaborate with
diverse stakeholders and advocate for policies that support sustainable
farming and local control over food.\n\n\n\nAs the founder and Executiv
e Director of Angels of Africa International https://www.angelsofafrica.
org/ he oversees a non-profit project in rural Kenya focused on sustaina
ble farming and environmental restoration. He has worked with local farm
ers to implement practices that increase food production\, restore damag
ed land\, and protect biodiversity. Through this hands-on experience he
has learned how to implement community-driven solutions based on respect
for local knowledge.\n\n\n\nThrough these experiences\, Gordon has gain
ed a comprehensive understanding of how food is produced\, distributed\,
and consumed. He is dedicated to advocating for food systems that nouri
sh communities\, empower local farmers\, and protect the environment. By
empowering local communities to have control over their own food system
s\, we can ensure that they have the resources to build a healthy and su
 stainable future.
