The Gospel of Matthew and Christian Anti-Semitism

As hate speech and crimes against Jews and Jewish synagogues increase in the United States and Europe, it is necessary for Christians of conscience to recognize how poor interpretations of the New Testament, in particular the gospels, can be used to rationalize such horrific behavior. As we enter December, the Gospel of Matthew – both seemingly friendly and unfriendly to Jews – will be heard in our parish liturgies. How might our understanding of the context in which Matthew wrote his gospel help us avoid one of the original sins of Christian faith and life?
