Christ Church is hiring a Residential Caretaker.

Position Title:  Residential Caretaker
Position Schedule: 18hrs/week. Daily hours morning/evening; Sunday mornings required. Tracked by timecard.
Compensation: A 800sq/ft two-bedroom, 1 bath, full-kitchen basement apartment located on campus at 310 N K Street, Tacoma, Washington. Laundry usually available.
Benefits: The position is not eligible for medical/dental and pension benefits. Two weeks of vacation is provided, and two weeks of sick leave.

The part-time Caretaker works with the Rector (priest), Junior Warden, staff and volunteers to monitor the buildings and property for health and safety issues, manage trash and recycling and control access. The Caretaker is under the direct supervision of the Rector in partnership with the Junior Warden. The Caretaker is required to live on the property as a condition of employment in order to properly accomplish the necessary duties.

The person in this position will have regular contact with unhoused neighbors who utilize our campus, some of whom are physically and mentally unwell. We offer them dignity and respect without blame or shame, and expect respect from them if they utilize our campus. The person in this position must be able to remain clear, respectful, and compassionate as they help maintain campus codes of conduct.

Caretaker Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  1. Each morning and before major events clear the campus and parking lot of debris and trash, removing and properly depositing items. Empty outdoor and indoor trash cans as needed.
  2. Manage the dumpsters and recycling bins to ensure proper disposal.
  3. Monitor passthrough and entrances for cleanliness and safety.
  4. Perform regular (evening) security checks of campus, checking doors, windows and entrances. 
  5. In case of snow and ice emergencies, clear the front sidewalk and walkways to all entrances.
  6. Replace burned out bulbs, smoke and carbon dioxide alarms in buildings and simple building maintenance as requested by the Rector and Junior Warden.
  7. Report required repair work to the Junior Warden.
  8. Change outdoor signage under direction of staff.
  9. Reinforce standards of conduct on campus, contact police, emergency responders and parking enforcement as necessary and report any critical incidents to the Junior Warden.
  10. Attend weekly Staff Meetings meetings (Monday mornings), reviewing upcoming events calendar and weekly tasks and projects.
  11. Open and close the campus on Sundays. This includes initial setup as necessary for Spiritual Formation, Coffee Hour, and ensuring lights are off, burners are cleared, doors are locked, trash taken out, etc., at the end of Sunday activities.
  12. Other duties as assigned by the Rector.

Qualifications

  • Ability to interact respectfully with a variety of people, including those with addiction and mental illness.
  • Experience in handling simple repairs.
  • Must be able to carry up to 40 pounds, access all the buildings and property and climb a short ladder

Requirements

  • Criminal Background Check
  • Safe Church training within first 6 months of employment
  • Participate in regular Staff meetings and staff review process
  • Must have high school diploma or GED and a minimum of two years work experience.
